Head vs. Heart: The Imaginary Divide

Alex Wall will talk about the biochemical relationship between what we metaphorically think of as "the head" and "the heart."

Traditionally, we grow up understanding that "the head" is rooted in all things logical, practical, reasonable, and demonstrable, while "the heart" is focused more on what we cannot prove, but rather only feel, experience, and, in the very best of instances, maybe describe.

My presentation will explore the background of this imagined divide, why and how this dichotomy is reinforced, and the many empirical reasons that demonstrate how appallingly incorrect this assumption is.

Audience members will be exposed to neuroscientific studies, dissected, analyzed, and explained in plain English -- and these studies will show exactly how dependent our intellectual and physical well-being are on our emotional dispositions, and what we've learned about how the two can mutually enhance one another.

Questions will be encouraged. Games will be played. Fun will be had. Minds will be blown.

Workshop - More Amore Meditation

In this experiential workshop, you will be guided in a regressive meditation designed to expand your capacity to love. Research shows that “your interpersonal experiences with your mother during the first 12 to 18 months of life can predict your behavior in romantic relationships over 20 years later” (Science Daily 12/14/11). These experiences encode “love imprints” in our minds that we are not even aware of.

Unfortunately some of these imprints can become blocks to love. This regressive guided meditation is designed to remove these blocks and expand your capacity to love.

Hearty Foods

You need to eat. You need your heart. And the food you eat affects the health of your heart. Heart disease is a PREVENTABLE (and reversible) cause of illness and death. Eating and living for heart health does not have to be a monstrous, bland effort. Learn about the foods to eat AND how to get them into your daily life. My father changed his diet (and enjoyed it!) and within 3 months had a greater improvement than decades of medication had provided. There is no single route to heart health through diet, but there are guidelines. Come and get a head "heart" start!

Be In Your Body, Find Your Beauty

I have stood on many stages in my life, or I have mostly hidden from the spotlight. Now, I have stepped into my visibility and my voice. I hope to be a beacon and role model for anyone who is struggling with a disability, visible, invisible… or any challenge. I can help you learn to discover the beauty in your flaws. You will not call in the love of your life until you love and accept yourself. We have all heard this before, and it feels cliché just writing this, but it’s really true! I have learned to stand in the embodied knowing of my beauty, as a woman with a visible disability. I want to “break beauty out of the box,” out of the narrow confines of our societal standards of perfection. Let’s see beauty outside of the margins.

Aha! Now What? How to Turn Inspiration into Transformation

The language of the heart is inspiration.  We have all had Aha Moments: when suddenly everything makes sense, we feel connected to the universe, and living well seems simple.

But how often does that giddy state of inspiration fade with the passage of time?  We are left with nothing but a memory and a sense of failure.  We question whether or not we actually have the power to change anything.

The fact is, we can change our lives.

I have developed a simple plan take anyone’s moment of inspiration and turn it into profound transformation.  In a way, inspiration is the easy part.  We can find it on our yoga mats, with a journal, in nature.  HeartCamp offers an endless supply.

Transformation is quite different than inspiration.  It’s a process.  A calculation.  It’s methodical  and requires different skills than inspiration.  It’s the work that changes everything.

Inspiration is a gift from the universe.  It’s an invitation sent directly to our hearts to motivate us to live the life we truly want and deserve.  My talk will both inspire you to make transformation and give the steps you need to actually do it.

Just imagine what your life would be if you took all those Aha Moments out of your heart and made them the reality you actually live.

Workshop - Ritmos del Corazón (Heart Rhythms)

The heart beats constantly while we're alive but how often do we think of it as the music inside our bodies? The heart is like a drum -- a muscle that beats constantly. It's the first sound we hear inside the womb -- our mother's heartbeat (if not our own).  Drumming in a community scenario (as in a drum circle) can be incredibly therapeutic and generate extraordinary vitality.

Enjoy a lively session with local Afro-Cuban funk band PALO! drummers Raymer Olalde and Philbert Armenteros, who will introduce us to amazing Afro-Latin rhythms such as the "cha cha cha" and if we have time, the rumba and guaguancó.

Along with moderator Maria de los Angeles, they will lead a session on rhythm and participants will get to "perform" themselves with little egg shaker maracas. Raymer and some volunteers will help with the dance moves. No music experience required. Come and enjoy!

Litana Somoano, a local drum circle player/dancer, will also assist.
