Shelly Baer, a licensed clinical social worker, has worked in the Miami community for more than 20 years. She’s employed at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s, Mailman Center for Child Development as Coordinator of The Emerging Transformational Leadership Program and Associate Director of Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Training Program.
Ms. Baer grew up in Miami and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and master’s from Yeshiva University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work in NY.
Shelly was part of Miami Fellows Initiative, a prestigious leadership program funded through the Dade Community Foundation. Through her participation in MFI, she published Access Miami, a comprehensive accessibility resource guide for the disabled. It is currently in its fourth edition. Ms. Baer was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at age three, but it has never slowed her down. She pushes boundaries and doesn’t let her disability hold her back. She served on the board of Center for Independent Living for ten years. In 2006, through her involvement in CIL, Ms. Baer co-created Uncensored Life: Raw Beauty, a photography exhibit that showcased the beauty, sensuality and empowerment of women with disabilities.
Shelly is a sought after speaker to colleges and medical schools where she opens up dialogues and sheds light on the ins and outs of dating, relationships and having sex with a disability. There are still many myths and stereotypes regarding people with disabilities and sexuality; Shelly is on a mission to break that up!
In 2011, Ms. Baer was honored with a Red Cross Women’s Spectrum Award in the education category for her outreach and education regarding the disabled. In September 2011, she gave a TEDxMiami talk on “The Beauty of Disability.” Last year, she was featured in Arthritis Today magazine and was on CBS News with Shannon Hori.
Ms. Baer graduated from Evolving Wisdom’s Feminine Power, a Mastery Leadership program in feminine power transformative principles and conducts “Love Groups” using the book “Calling in the One” by Katherine Woodward Thomas. She has a coaching and counseling business helping individuals find love and have healthy relationships. Recently married, she is working on a memoir about her dating dramas with a disability.
